(Salt Lake City, UT--October 3, 2001)-
In a recently completed Psychobiological study, a team at Pepperdine University led by Dr. Holden MacCrae tested
the effect of cycling with and without real-time video feedback. The studies findings showed interactive video
feedback improved performance without increasing perceived exertion in untrained women. These infrequent exercisers
burned more calories in the same time with the same effort while using Exerscape!
The study used ten women, five well trained regular exercisers and five untrained, occasional exercisers. Each
participant underwent laboratory testing on three separate occasions over a three-week period. The first session
established a baseline of aerobic cycling performance and demonstrated the Exerscape interactive DVD video system.
The final two sessions were conducted using Exerscape and music or music only, both a thirty-minute performance test
followed by a battery of psychological assessments.
While the fit, experienced cyclists trained at very similar speeds in both tests, the untrained subjects attained
significantly higher average speed and distance cycled in the Exerscape session. With Exerscape infrequent exercisers
cycled over 11% further with the same perceived effort, burning significantly more calories at the same time.
IXR's breakthrough Exerscape™ technology provides an unmatched level of realism
by seamlessly varying the video rate of high-quality MPEG2 video. As Jim
Taylor, noted author of "DVD Demystified", stated, "Exerscape is an unparalleled
advancement of stunning simplicity." Originally conceived and invented by IXR
founder Bruce Ewert, Exerscape™ enables high-quality digital video speed to
be manipulated at will. Mr. Ewert, with his Speilbergian visage and varied
sporting and technologic background, notes "this is just the first step of
where we want to take users as we continue to push the frontiers of realistic
POV capture and user-driven displays, with real-time Internet connectivity!"
The Blackburn Motivator Interactive Real Video Training System is the first product based
on the Exerscape™ variable rate digital video technology invented by IXR Corp.
Exerscape smoothly varies the video speed under the control of the wheel speed.
As you pedal faster, you go faster through the helmet cam video filmed on location. Self-selected
music, played from the Internet or a CD, enhances the Exerscape experience. Workout data is
saved for review. The Exerscape.com Web
database will enable users to share their workout information with coaches, rehabilitation
specialists, and others.
The Motivator is now for sale at Blackburn dealers for a suggested retail price
of $399. It requires a 400 Mhz PC with Windows 98 or newer and a DVD ROM drive. An included hardware link connects
the bicycle to
the PC, transmitting speed and (optionally) heart rate to the Exerscape video program. The included first disc
contains 18 rides in Moab, Utah, Monterey, California, and Paris-Roubaix, France, for a total of over three hours
of healthy entertainment.
