[1] *** ALERT ***Setup.vob does not play.

We have received recent reports that the Hardware Setup Video, named setup.vob, does not play. The symptom is nothing happens, or a DVD player comes up and does not play the video. The most likely problem is the File Type setting, which can be changed as follows:
  • In the File Explorer Window, click on View, then Folder Options.
  • Click File Types, then click on a Registered File Type to see details.
  • Find current association for VOB, probably either a Movie Clip or a Video Clip.
  • If no current association for VOB exists, use "New Type" to create one, else "Edit" the existing association.
  • Description of type should be "Movie Clip".
  • Content type should be "video/mpeg", chosen from drop-down menu.
  • Associated extension should be ".vob".
  • Action should be "Play".
  • Opens with "MPLAYER2", which is normally found in the "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player" folder.
Now, if you have a MPEG2 decoder installed, the Setup.vob video file should play when you double click on it, in the root directory of the Motivator DVD.

[2] Ride video does not play--specific decoder issues

[2.1] Ravisent Cinemaster (Gateway, HP, Dell)

The Ravisent Cinemaster DVD Player is now factory installed on Gateway, Hewlett Packard, and Dell PCs, among others. Working with Pete Nush at Ravisent, we have solved this problem and the next release of the Cinemaster DVD Player works fine with Exerscape. This release is expected to be available later this year. Check back or click here to e-mail me to be notified when it is available.

Until this issue is resolved, you can try the Ligos decoder included on the DVD, and purchase this decoder if you wish. The five-day demo included will verify that the decoder will work on your PC.

[2.3]WinDVD decoder

We recently received an update for the ivivideo.ax filter graph file that works with Exerscape. This may be received upon request via e-mail(click here).

[2.3]Xing decoder

We have had some success, with occasional failures. This decoder is rarely seen anymore, so unless we recieve specific customer complaints we will use our limited resources to add features to the Exerscape program. The Ligos decoder shipped on the Motivator DVD may be installed and used.

[2.4]Cyberlink PowerDVD decoder

This has a failure on the second ride, after the first ride works fine. We have not solved this issue as of today. The Ligos decoder shipped on the Motivator DVD may be installed and used.

[2.5]Compaq and Sony PCs and Notebooks and Toshiba Notebooks Recommended

The Mediamatics DVDExpress and the Ligos LSX Player are the most compliant with the Microsoft DirectShow programming interface and we have had the best results with them. For this reason we recommend Compaq and Sony PCs and Notebooks and Toshiba Notebooks for use with Exerscape. These very well regarded PC manufacturers factory install DVDExpress for DVD playback.

[3] Ride video does not play on PC with both DVD and CD-R

Exerscape assumes that the first CD-type drive it finds is the DVD. This setting is saved in the exerscape.ini file and may be edited as necessary.

To edit exerscape.ini, exit Exerscape, then:

  • Right click Start, left click Explore to start the File Explorer
  • Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Exerscape folder.<\li>
  • Right-click on exerscape.ini. Open with the Notepad.<\li>
  • Look for "DVDPath=?" Compare "?" with what the left side of the File Explorer window shows as the DVD ROM drive.<\li>
  • Change "?" to match the letter of the DVD ROM drive if different.<\li>
  • Save exerscape.ini and start Exerscape.<\li>

[4] Software Updates

Our shipping software, Ver 1.0.0.0, is now shipping on the Blackburn Motivator DVD ROM.

THE FREE UPDATES FOR EXERSCAPE OWNERS ARE:

Exerlink Update
exerlink.dll file--right click here and save to the "C:\Program Files\Exerscape\Equipment" directory. Last updated Sept. 20, 2002.

RideViewer Utility
RideViewer.exe file--right click here and save to "C:\Program Files\Exerscape" directory.

Show Graphs Update
Right click here and save showgraphs.html to the "C:\Program Files\Exerscape\html" folder. This is the HTML page that displays the workout graphs and data after a ride video ends.

We plan to update Exerscape software regularly, and invite users to hack the showgraphs.HTML code and make suggestions about how to make it more useful. Last updated on October 20,2000.

Last updated January 28, 2000.

[5]Windows 2000 Compatability

We do not claim to fully support Windows 2000 at this time. The various software DVD players are not all mature enough to fully support the Microsoft Windows Media DirectShow API yet. We do know of several cases where users are running Exerscape under Windows 2000, as we do here, in R&D.

You are welcome to give it a shot and we will help however we can. This includes prodding player manufacturers when we know about configurations that do not work at present. We would like to hear about your experience if you do try Exerscape on Windows 2000.

[6]Windows ME Compatability

Windows ME has worked fine in our testing so far. We are just starting to get feedback from the field and would like to hear from Windows ME users.

[7]How do I make my own videos?<

[7.1] Shoot helmet cam or automobile mount DV video

Use a standard miniDV digital video camera, such as those made by Sony, Panasonic, Canon and many others. See Supervideo.com for information on the latest gear and nice editing notebooks. Cool camera helmets can be found at Headhunter.com, Skydance.com, and several other sites. Our lead cinematographer Tom Grissom uses a helmet cam setup and rides an offroad motorcycle. He stands with flexed knees to keep the camera as steady as possible.

[7.2] Edit with FireWire on PC

USe a standard DV/Firewire editing system to create DV ride video files. If they are over five minutes long you may need to capture and edit in separate files to get around the 2 Gb file size limit. Add fades, titles, credits, whatever you want.

[7.3] Encode with Ligos MPEG2 encoder

The least expensive way to get high quality MPEG2 is a software encoder from Ligos. The LSX-MPEG Suite costs $300. For $400 you also get an Adobe Premiere plug-in encoder. Click here to learn more and buy direct from Ligos. At a healthy average 3Mb to 5Mb/second video data rate, you will get six to ten minutes of MPEG2 video on a CD-RW disc. DVD drives can normally read CD-RW discs, but most can not read CD-R discs.

[7.4] Build C:/ExerDV folder, edit exerscape.ini

Create a new folder to hold the video files and HTML that accesses them, something like C:/ExerDV. Copy the \html and \graphics files from the Exerscape DVD ROM to the C:/ExerDV folder. Create a new C:/ExerDV/rides folder and the desired sub-folders that hold the actual ride videos. Then copy the ride video files into the desired sub-folder.

Note the name passed with the call is the name of a sub-folder in the /rides folder referred to by the DVDPath in the "C:/Program Files/Exerscape/exerscape.ini" file. Use Notepad to edit the DVDPath line to refer to the new ExerDV folder, for example:

"DVDPath=C:/ExerDV"

For example, if you videoed your favorite loop through the windshield riding speed and created

"C:/ExerDV/rides/newride"
|--"newride_1.vob"
|--"newride_2.vob"
|--"ride.ini"

"C:/ExerDV/rides/favorite_loop/ride.ini" file should contain:

"[Section]
RideName="My Rides"
SectionName="New Ride"
Length=3.1

[Video Files]
Video01="newride_1.vob"
Video02="newride_2.vob"

And the "C:/ExerDV/html/index.html" file add an external call something like: " Click anywhere to start video "

Of course you can copy and modify the HTML off the DVD ROM for your own use as needed. Make it as simple or as pretty as you want. Point to it from "Exerscape.ini". We are working on a gadget to automate the building of HTML controls for your own video rides.

We are working on a way to share rides created by users. For now the MPEG2 files are too big. You can fit six to ten minutes of full screen, full speed video on a CD-RW and mail it to someone. It would take hours to download the same 650Mb, even on DSL or a cable modem. But solutions to this problem are being worked on--stay tuned!

If you have video you would like to share or sell to other users, send us a description and contact info. We will start with a page describing the current offerings. You must decide whether to fill orders yourself or have IXR fill them, for a small fee.

[8]How long are the rides on the included Motivator disc?

The included Motivator disc has 18 rides. These rides are accessible on three screens. The rides, rider, and the length in time at 25 MPH are:

Screen 1--Moab
Highway 313, Moab Carmen Richardson 7:29
Shafer Trail In Carmen Richardson 13:46
Airport Tower Carmen Richardson 14:49
Monument Basin East Carmen Richardson 8:19
Buck Canyon East Carmen Richardson 18:18
Candlestick Susan DeMattei 9:05

Screen 2--Moab
Twins Basin East Carmen Richardson 9:55
Taylors Canyon Susan DeMattei 4:45
Monument Basin West Carmen Richardson 11:23
Gooseberry West Carmen Richardson 6:37
Shafer Up Carmen Richardson 21:39
Shafer Rim Carmen Richardson 6:03

Screen 3--Bonus Road Rides

Paris-Roubaix 1999 Pro Peleton 19:03
Alpe du Huez Pro Peleton w/Pantani 2:39

If you ride at an average slower than 25 MPH, the rides will take longer, and vice versa. We plan on releasing a future update that will allow multiple rides to be put together in a playlist. This way longer rides may be taken without having to start a new ride every so often.

If you find any bugs, please e-mail me details and attach a copy of the "C:\Program Files\Exerscape\Exerscape.log" file. If you have any questions, comments, problems, etc. please contact me directly at bewert@exerscape.com The Exerscape interactive exercise system has been a dream of mine for several years and I will do everything I can do make it work for you now and make it better for everyone in the future.

Enjoy!
